Description

Ethma, from The End by Ran and Cory Brown.

I really wanted to add a fiah to this collection.
They just look so unearthly. Sure they kind of look like birds, but, they are impossibly dark as if they just absorb light around them, and yet they have these glowing eyes... There's something seriously unnatural about these creatures.

I was originally intending to have this looming pose that really sells their unearthly state with a look of severe intimidation; I was going to imitate what we see from Endi on this page: [link]
But with all the other characters in the scene, especially with Robster taking up so much space, I had to make Ethma a bit less loomy to get her to fit right.

I was originally just thinking I wanted a Fiah in the scene, but when it came time for the rubber to meet the road I decided I wanted Ethma because she's so much more cranky than Endi, making her seem so much more imposing. However, I almost wound up actually drawing Endi by mistake, thinking at the time that the appearance of the plumage was dependant upon the angle. I spent a lot of time carefully studying the characters to make sure I was getting their features right, and that I wasn't missing other distinguishing characteristics.
And after I finished this drawing Ran posted a guide to recognizing the characters because of some confusion from other readers.

Unlike the others, I decided to draw this character completely on my tablet, instead of on paper. It would help me better match the look given in the original comic, which looks almost as if it were drawn in a vector program. But when I started drawing I could not get her to look right at all. I wound up actually sketching her on paper (which took me many tries) and then drawing over my scan of the sketch.
